Moreover, why does this occur? One would think that seasoned actors and actresses are quite capable of convincing viewers that they're madly in love with their co-stars. But for one reason or another, some films have credits that are more entertaining than the love scenes contained therein.

The purpose for including intimate scenes in a movie (other than to titillate the viewer) is to cement the sense of authenticity of the film. Most people, no matter the age, sex, or social status, can relate to a heartfelt love story. So when a film's racy scenes fall short of enticing, it can leave a bad impression.
